Thai girl group G20 meets Onew

All the Thai kids are crazy about K-pop. Lots of them try to look like their favorite idol. And some Thai girl groups copy a lot of the K-pop girl groups. So here’s a little TV show where the Thai girl group G20 tries to impress K-pop idol Onew.

The girls are really cute, but when they get Onew on stage with them he has a really weird reaction when one of the girls pretends she is going to kiss him. What is up with that? Check out the video.

Possibly he thinks he’s too special for just any cute girl to kiss?

  2. John C Says:

    That is a weird reaction….

    Either, a) he’s a gay-boy…

or b) he’s got a Korean GF at home who’d be waiting to chop off his ***** when he returns home….

Personally, my bet would be for option a).

  3. AsianSweetheart Says:

I don’t know. Even gay guys like to kiss cute girls, not in a lusting sort of way but in a fun girlfriends sort of way. I think it might be b), he’s afraid is honey (whether that’s a boy or girl I don’t know) will be very mad. But that’s so dumb when you are a big pop idol. You have to be flirty fun with everybody.

  4. John Says:

Perhaps he’s got a phobia about touching or germs – like Howie Mandel? I don’t know who Onew is, but is it possible? Or your (b), which is IMO the most likely explanation – you remember how passionate late teens/early twenties can be.

  5. RETURN RANT Says:

I can’t believe it – he basically put his hand up near her face as if he was somehow going to become pop-idol infected with a flirtatious action. I don’t suppose his millions of fickle fans care at the moment, but when he loses popularity such bizarre emotions will become more noticeable and apparent. Fancy having all of those pretty lovelies around you and looking like it is some kind of trauma. they seemed to be favouring gladiator style high heel shoes, nice :-)

  6. Peter Says:

Typical Thais – copy everything; nothing original.

And before you ask: Yes, I know Thais very well; I’ve lived in Thailand for 19 years.

  7. AsianSweetheart Says:

Usually I don’t approve racist comments. But this time I did just so other readers can see it for themselves.

  8. returnrant Says:

Although I don’t agree with Peter’s sweeping comment, there are plenty of what could be called racist comments on the site with comments aimed at foreigners generally. surely on the internet the argument ‘this is Thailand’ doesn’t mean Peter’s comments are worse than any number of comments about “farangs’. I evem recall criticism of most foreigners pronunciation of Thai which is ludicrous given the general poor standard of English spoken in Thailand and Thai not being the ‘language of the world’ the list goes on, so keep the pretty photos coming. Best to stay away from religion politics and law. So many experts out there…

  9. AsianSweetheart Says:

The language thing is an interesting discussion. Here in Thailand we speak Thai. The second language we usually choose to learn these days is not English, it’s Chinese. One reason you can see is here, more than 1 billion people speak Chinese. Just like the rest of the world we do a lot of trade with China. The most important world language probably won’t be English in the future. I think it is already fading in importance for us in Thailand.

  10. John C Says:

    Ahh… I hadn’t thought about the germ phobia possibility… That’s interesting to consider… The Howie Syndrome…

Or, maybe he just has a phobia about Thai girl groups that are imitating Korean girl groups that are imitating Japanese J-Pop girl groups that, as best as I can tell, don’t exactly have a comparable predecessor… :-)

Or, maybe, it has something to do with the fact that I see and read this guy came down with a case of the swine flu back in late 2009.

Here’s how the KPop blog the video came from described the episode:

“SHINee’s Onew was indeed a very lucky man on this episode. Two popular girl groups from Thailand pitted themselves in a battle to win over Onew. One of the groups was G20, deemed the SNSD of Thailand, while the other was Thailand’s original girl group, Candy Mafia.

As these two girl groups serenaded Onew with their charms, he became overwhelmed with happiness and had a difficult time controlling his balance. Sadly, the girls didn’t even bother to glance at the other handsome men guests, further causing more laughs for viewers.”

I’ve been overwhelmed with happiness a few times in my life, but not exactly like that…

  11. phobo Says:

typical ‘nope, sorry, got a GF back home’ behaviour … gosh with 10 years more life experience what a night he could’ve had …

  12. PinkSamantha Says:

    @Peter

Hmm… My GF is a Thai, a native, cute and pretty (before you say anything, she came from decent, conservative family and graduated from Bangkok University, so she’s not a bargirl), and doesn’t want to do what other girls from other countries do just because it looks cute or charming or unique. So… no, you’re wrong. I think it’s better if you just write “typical Thai copycats”, since not every Thai is a copycat. Only some of them are.

About the thread, I have my own opinions.

    A. He’s a shy person, and a shy person cannot hide his/her shyness even when he/she becomes a public figure.

    B. He never experienced anything like that before, so probably he was just surprised or shocked.

    C. He’s a conservative person.

    D. This is a bit extreme, but… I think he’s still too young for that kind of “flirt”, and he realized that, so he was like wow hold on! what’s this? my mom’s gonna kill me!

    @John C

“Or, maybe he just has a phobia about Thai girl groups that are imitating Korean girl groups that are imitating Japanese J-Pop girl groups that, as best as I can tell, don’t exactly have a comparable predecessor…”

    LOL who doesn’t? XD
Well said, I like that. XD

  13. Fa Says:

I’m pretty sure it’s because it would create a scandal amongst the Korean fangirls. Korean fangirls can get nasty when it comes to someone flirting with their favorite idols.

And Onew wants to avoid that. And probably a reprimand from the execs at SM Entertainment.

  14. retuRN RANT Says:

that’s so funny AS why don’t you change your website to Chinese then. If you are willing to wait 50 to 100 years then you will be proven right but I suspect you might not be around then. I will certainly have my children learn Chinese, but as they will be half Thai and half English I suppose they ought to learn those languages too. How ridiculous that you need to state that Thai is the language of Thailand. Perhaps you feel logical statements are somehow answers to world affairs. Perhaps your next statement will be “get out Farang”! How amusing. PM Abhisit, whom I admire and respect, seems to think English is a pretty good bet for now, and I don’t see him presenting on Chinese news channels in Chinese, but I do seem him on BBC World and CNN presenting in English. Thaksin’s English is pretty bad, and this gave a bad impression. If I was a politician, I would brush up on my Thai – but then hardly likely that I will ever be a Thai politician ! Your comment simply means that your nationalistic tendencies are taking over any intellectual faculties before you write. It is ok to be emotional and nationalistic about a beautiful country, but it doesn’t unfortunately make you ‘right’ about a topic of discussion. As my next business will actually be in the Special Administrative Region of China and as a person who is very familiar with how the one country two regions came into existence, I certainly don’t need any guidance on the ‘1 billion’ people in China. Perhaps you should check out what the majority of the 1 billion people in China actually do, at the moment and then work out which segment of the 1 billion plus Chinese people you would talk to during your lifetime.

you should also try and watch NBT at 7.30am and then let me know why there is a news channel on Thai news, in English, and not Chinese. I am so pleased that this channel takes the dissemination of English seriously and this means students can learn English and keep abreast of the news whilst foreigners like me can catch up on the news whilst we continue to try and brush up on our Thai language.

AS – you really ought to self-reflect on your racist tendencies. Trying to exert the power of a nation you don’t ‘belong to’ over another nation you don’t belong to by reference to language is indicative of some kind of underlying issue. I am not a psychologist – but it is quite apparent from your response – or maybe you can find to clarify and correct my interpretation.

ps. I can search the internet quickly too, so no need to include weblinks in your response unless the weblink is something I couldn’t find using my own faculties.

  15. AsianSweetheart Says:

Too late for me with Chinese. English was the most important language 20 years ago when I went to America. You might be the only person who thinks it will take another 50 to 100 years for that to change.

The rest is too long and goes in too many directions for me, but thanks for the advice on self reflection. Ok, I’m doing that now, one moment while I reflect…nope, no racist tendencies found, thanks anyway.

“Here in Thailand we speak Thai”

    that’s a classic.

  19. Somchai Says:

I liked it better when the website was about celebrities and hotties…..

    >”Thaksin’s English is pretty bad”

I must ask – how can his English be bad when he was raised in England? Even if he wasn’t he must have caught a clue at Eton and Oxford? Everything is relative I suppose.

Kudos to AS for approving this “debate” on her own website…. back to regularly scheduled programming?

  20. retuRN RANT Says:

Thaksin didn’t attend Eton or Oxford. the current PM did – PM Abhisit. His English and his education his excellent. An open minded Thai who loves his country as it is now but is also committed to making his country better. He appears humble notwithstanding he can humble others with lesser capabilities.

I agree that is was nice of AS to indulge a mini-debate. Helped me let off a bit of internet steam anyway…
