Poor BeBe getting banned

White BlackBerry Bold

Oh the poor BeBe (that’s the nickname we use for the Blackberry in Thailand). It’s getting banned a bunch of places.

United Arab Emirates is going to suspend some of the text services for the BeBe starting October because communication is encrypted so the government is unable to spy on users. In India they have a similar problem and there they said that Blackberry is going to have to set up a central server that the government can monitor. Bahrain has banned people from sharing local news on the Blackberry to “avoid confusion” – I wonder how they monitor that. Pakistan blocked the web browser function of the BeBe over concerns about blasphemy.

Why am I mentioning all this? Well, doesn’t it sound like Thailand is headed in the same direction?. We have many thousands of blocked websites and some big new government organizations dedicated to monitoring communications to find anything that might be damaging to the “security” of the country. Is the cute little BeBe going to be a victim here, too?

Which makes me wonder why it’s only the Blackberry. Must be all the other smart phones are easy to spy on.

Well, some people are just stupid and paranoid. I guess they are just afraid of their people would convert to other religions or criticise them.

They need to ease off a bit and try to “pay attention” to girls like Pang or May.

I don’t know what the official statistics are…. But I do know, every time I travel on the Skytrain in BKK and look around, it seems every woman with a smartphone is fiddling away on a Blackberry. Rarely see IPhones here… But Blackberrys are far more common than I would have expected…. When I first moved to Thailand a few years back, Blackberrys seemed like they hardly existed here in BKK. But now that’s all changed… Upcountry, though, not so much…

Yes, BB rules here. Apple never got big in Thailand so not many people buy iPhone. I see a lot of ads for iPhone but not many owners. BB got popular with many dara seen with them so everybody had to have one.

I don’t think it’s stupidity – I think governments are increasingly aware of how powerful it is to control information. And not many governments are powerful enough to complete with major corporations in cryptography.

The funny part of this is I’ve owned Blackberrys in the past and used them for my mobile phone back in the U.S., and had a couple when I first moved here… But I’ve never used them here…

Why? Because when I went to price mobile phone service plans here a few years ago, all the carriers seemed to be charging significantly extra for providing Blackberry service relative to what they were charging for regular GSM phones with data/email service.

I wasn’t inclined to pay extra for the privilege of using my Blackberrys, so I just shelved them and got regular GSM compatible models when the time came to get new hardware. Nokia first and later some others…

Seems like Blackberrys, at least in BKK, may have taken a good bite out of Nokia’s former market share.

In my experience with Thai women, many have asked me for an I-phone, a very expensive purchase in Thailand, but NONE have ever asked me for a Blackberry. Perhaps it is the quality of the women I associate with that makes this the case, but I have found, overall, that the I-phone is in much greater demand….

Terrorism is an ever present threat anywhere now. I think there are just to many phone calls and sms for people to be worried that their own calls are being listened in on. The monitoring just listens for key words that terrorists may use, nothing wrong with that. The problems arise when governments interfere with freedom of expression for what doesn’t appear to be any valid reason.
