Readers in Thailand have probably seen this commercial by Gnet featuring Poy, the most famous katoey in Thailand. I know it is disturbing to some people but I find it very interesting that a boy can end up looking so much like a cute young girl. Check out the video to see what I mean.

Fascinating. I think I can safely say all US companies would not chose such a spokesperson, for fear of conservative backlash. But as far as I can judge, it’s a pretty good commercial.

I would leave the light on if I got her back into my room.

Poy manages to project a very natural, understated image – jeans and sneakers, very little makeup, sticking her tongue out – which really breaks the katoey stereotype. She seems very ‘dek dee’. I blame it on the influence of her very understanding (and quite beautiful) mom, who told her something like, “If you really want to be a woman, then I will treat you like a woman, because you must act like a woman, not a ladyboy.” I hope she ends up with a female ID, a husband and adopted kids.
