I found something fun today and wasted a lot of time did some important research with it. It is a tool that displays trends by looking at the photo tags on Flickr.
There are millions (10’s of millions?) of photos on Flickr and so many more being added each day that it is a pretty big set of data for things like finding trends. I was thinking about my previous post on the old blog about what I overheard at the salon and how I always thought that American men were crazy about blonde girls. So I thought I would check that trend and that’s the graph I got above. Yep, lots more people taking photos of blondes than brunettes, although it looks like the brunettes are gaining and the blondes are dropping off a little.
Here is another one – smile versus eyes. Looks like eyes are way ahead and pulling away farther.
Ok, time for serious research. I wonder what was happening last summer that got so many photos of people’s butts posted on Flickr.
The tool is at http://flickrtrends.appspot.com/ Too bad it doesn’t seem to support Thai language – I get no results if I enter Thai words. Does Flickr support Thai language tags?
I first read about the Flickr trend tool at the Trend Spotting blog.
