When you post your photo on a dating site is it better to use a studio photo or a self shot photo? When I was running my matchmaking site I always told the girls to get some nice studio shots done. Sometimes they wouldn’t and would give me horrible little passport photos to post with their profiles.
The ones who got nice studio shots often looked great in their photos and got lots of contacts. But that sometimes led to a problem when a man met them and was upset that she didn’t look nearly as good in person, ouch! But what about revealing and suggestive self shots like this one? It seems more intimate and personal and maybe better than even those really nice studio shots.

On online dating sites involving Thai women, the default photo these days usually seems to include some variety of self-done cleavage shot… Not that I mind too much!!!

Another side of the same coin, frequently amateur models use highly stylized and retouched photos to advertise themselves. Sometimes, the model bears little resemblance to the photo, which can be surprising or even irritating to a photographer.
There is something intimate and “gritty” about some self-made “suggestive” photos. However, a good photographer can achieve the same emotional impact even with a highly produced set – look at Helmut Newton’s work for exceptional examples.
I do admit that the intimate, self-made photos on the “Meet This Girl” ads do tend to be more eye-catching, though.

I don’t get too excited about dating websites, mainly because they are too expensive… but I am on several websites like, facebook, tagged, etc.. and to tell the truth, I hardly ever answer to any of the girls unless they happen to have some revealing photos in their profile… I figure, what the heck, if she is going to be advertising, show the wares, right?
